Rudolf Dassler, the founder of PUMA, originally founded a different company with his brother Adolf Dassler. Together they founded the company Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik (Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory) in Herzogenaurach, Germany.
The brands original success was in 1928 at the Olympic Summer Games in Amsterdam where most of the German athletes wore Dassler Spikes in their events. Then another success was in 1936 at the Olympic Games in Berlin where famous athlete Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals in Dassler Spikes. All together there were 7 gold medals, 5 bronze medals and 5 Olympic records gained by athletes in Dassler footwear. This was the representation of the international breakthrough for the Dassler Brothers and their company.
In 1948 the brothers became rivals following World War II and founded their own companies. Rudolf Dassler founds the brand PUMA Schuhfabrik Rudolf Dassler which was registered Oct 1st. The brothers divided up the business assets of the original brand they both founded together, Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik (Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory).
