How modern is ‘modern’ sportswear?

While visiting London to visit another exhibition I luckily was informed by a vintage shop owner that there was a Reebok exhibition close by. For me this was great because of my personal interest in sport and athletics.

To start with I had to visit the lower ground of a sports fashion store. As soon as I got downstairs it looked different instantly. The room was near enough empty with large poster prints covering the whole walls apart from one wall that included a red and blue neon light section in the shape of the Reebok logo. It gave the room a kind of old club feel to it.

Included in the room there was a single rail with a few pieces of vintage Reebok clothing that were for sale and 4 manikins that showed off 3 vintage reebok sport jackets and one that showed off a vintage t-shirt. The clothing was very bright, it stood out, and it looked modern. These types of designs on vintage clothing look like they could be the inspiration for modern day sportswear designs.

The main feature of the exhibition looked to be vintage reebok sports footwear and trainers. The trainers were also made up of bright colours and they had a sort of block shape to them, kind of similar to some of the most recent releases of footwear from Balenciaga. Maybe designs of trainers like these inspired them. There were 7 different types of trainers that showed how the brands footwear designs had changes throughout the years.

This exhibition really just showed me that modern sportswear may have all this new tech and materials which has improved massively, but it has also shown me that when it comes to the designs and look of the clothing there are a lot of similarities between most modern sportswear and vintage sportswear and trainers than there are differences.
